PawshPhoto is a photography studio in Minneapolis that specializes in family portraits of pets. I had a chance to sit down with owner Maryann Cotoia and learn more about her work, as well as the joys and challenges of photographing animals.

PawshPhoto is a pet portrait studio in Minneapolis. We specialize in pet family portraits, but also do boudoir and pregnancy photography.
How did you get started with this?
I have always been interested in photography, but it wasn’t until I moved back to Minneapolis that I started exploring portraiture.
In 2011, I was looking for a new job and decided to try something different. I wanted to find a way where I could be creative without feeling like my creativity was being stifled by corporate bureaucracy or client demands. At first I considered becoming a wedding photographer because they often work independently from their clients and are given more freedom in their work schedule than those who work on location shoots such as commercial photography or advertising campaigns. However, after some research into the field of pet portraiture–which has become increasingly popular over the past decade–I realized this would be an excellent way for me not only express myself through photography but also help others express themselves through their pets!
How much does it cost to have a family portrait session?
We’re glad you asked!
It depends on the size of your family, how many pets you want included, and how many locations you’d like to use for your portrait session. We can accommodate any budget–from simple portraits on a white background to elaborate photo shoots with multiple locations and wardrobe changes (think: a bride in her wedding dress). The number of photos purchased also affects cost; if you buy one print, it will be more expensive than buying 10 prints at once. Lastly, our sessions are designed so that they last roughly an hour or two; however if you’d prefer something shorter or longer than this time frame please let us know ahead of time so we can adjust accordingly!
Do you do boudoir and pregnancy photography?
No, but I would love to do it!
I am not a photographer, but I would be happy to suggest some photographers who do this.
I am not sure if we will ever do this, but if you have any ideas, please let me know.
